KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo School Superintendent Michael Rice says they have hired security personnel, hardened buildings and adopted new policies to tighten security, and they did it long before Florida.
Dr. Rice says in the wake of the shootings in Parkland, he has met with local law enforcers to talk about ways they can improve security even more.
They are reviewing building diagrams and counting on passage of the spring bond for funding. He says 50 staff members have received training in trauma care, and 3 dozen in restorative justice, and more sessions are planned.
He says in the wake of the shootings in Florida, they also plan to beef up lobbying efforts to secure funding for more mental health and behavior specialists and other support personnel, to get at the root of the problem.
The FBI may have had trouble tracking down Nikolas Cruz the gunman in the Parkland, Florida shootings, and even the family he was living with claim they had no idea he was a “monster”.
Kalamazoo teachers say they know exactly who the monsters are, they see them every day in class and they are not getting nearly enough support to deal with them.
Last night the teacher’s union presented a list of demands to the Kalamazoo School Board, following an attack on one teacher, and regular threats to others, demanding more school counselors, nurses, behavior and mental health workers. Trustees say they would be happy to oblige if they had the money.
