LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — The Michigan State House has approved a three foot buffer for bicyclists, rejecting a five foot proposal approved in the Senate.
Kalamazoo and Portage passed the five foot requirement after the biking tragedy on North Westnedge that left five dead.
Portage Senator Margaret O’Brien took it to Lansing to try and make it the state standard, but House sponsor Holly Hughes says three feet is the standard adopted by most other states.
The bill now heads back to the senate for reconciliation.
Police agencies are critical of the legislation, saying it’s nearly impossible to enforce, and could put drivers at risk if they swing out too wide to get by a cyclist.
