GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC) – It appears to be 30 years and out for Grand Haven’s annual kite festival.
Organizers announced this year’s event, set for May 19 and 20 at Grand Haven State Park, will be the last. The news, posted as a note on the festival’s Facebook page, quotes two organizers, Steve and Lynn Negen, who said they are hoping to make this last kite-flying celebration the best.
The Negens, who own MACKite in Grand Haven, didn’t specify a reason, which drew a host of sad responses on social media. Some commenters speculated that the time and cost involved in the annual event just got to be too much. Others started planning this year’s visit, while a few suggested ways to keep it going for years.
The annual festival, organized by MACKite downtown and surf shops as well as the Visit Grand Haven tourism office, features all manner of kites, with music, at Grand Haven State Park.
