KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — City crews have begun the demolition work on the reflecting pools in Bronson Park, carefully removing the sculptures of the children created by local artist Kirk Newman which will be stored and placed elsewhere in the park.
Demolition on the controversial Fountain of the Pioneers will begin in a couple of weeks. While the Art Deco sculpture has been a fixture in Kalamazoo since before World War Two and earned a spot in the National Register of Historic Places, some think its depiction of White settlers dominating native Americans
City Commissioner Jack Urban doesn’t think the healing will begin until they come up with a plan to replace the fountain and thinks they should talk about it next Monday night.
Right now the only plan is to just replace it temporarily with grass, and install some new central construct next year.
There is still a lot of anger in the community over the decision to remove the fountain.
