LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Senator Tonya Schuitmaker’s Senate Higher Education Appropriations Subcommittee wants to give the state’s Universities $17-million more than the Governor proposed, but Western Michigan University won’t see much of it.
The extra money comes with strings.
The committee wants school administrators to spend most of it to bolster campus security, sexual assault prevention programs and mental health initiatives.
The budget bill would also require that every university governing board be informed of every Title IX complaint, so they can never claim again they are in the dark on the issues.
Despite the fact that Schuitmaker of Lawton chairs the panel, WMU will get the smallest share of the new money, just a 2.6% boost in total funding, the lowest of the 15 universities.
Oakland University will get 4.1% more and Grand Valley State University 3.7% more.
