HOLLAND (WKZO AM/FM) — Just in time for this year’s Holland Tulip Festival, the DeZwaan Windmill has been added to the list of sites on the Register of National Historic Places.
The authentic Dutch Windmill is the only one operating in the United States and the last to leave the Netherlands.
The structure, which was badly damaged during WW-2 was dismantled and transported to the U.S. in the early 60’s, rebuilt and restored. It was originally erected in 1761 in the Netherlands, making it one of the oldest structures in the State, if you discount it’s globetrotting.
It comes just as Kalamazoo is about to lose one of the sites that is listed on the national Register. Scaffolding is up around the Fountain of the Pioneers, which is also a listed site.
It is scheduled to be dismantled and put into storage this coming week.
