LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — The State House has approved a school safety package, the first since the Parkland shootings that doesn’t do anything about restricting guns, as students had requested, but does address other issues.
It would set up a State Police School Safety Commission that would offer advice to districts on how to harden their buildings, and require more training for first responders.
A measure opposed by Democrats requires that districts report on threats of violence annually. Sponsor Beau LeFave who is hoping for some collective wisdom to come out of the reports.
He hopes to compile the information, take the best practices and best lessons learned and share them between districts.
The package now heads to an uncertain future in the State Senate which is drafting its own package.
State Senator Margaret O’Brien is proposing a bill that would have local authorities inspect schools rather than State Police.
