HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — For the fourth consecutive day, high temperatures and little to no wind has the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality declaring an Action Day for elevated levels of ozone in West Michigan.
Pollutants are expected to be in the unhealthy range for sensitive groups. The Action Day is in effect for the following Michigan counties: Allegan, Ottawa, Mason, Oceana, Muskegon, Kent, and Van Buren.
People and businesses are urged to avoid activities which lead to ozone formation. These activities include:
- refueling vehicles
- topping off when refueling
- using gasoline powered lawn equipment
- using charcoal lighter fluid
Helpful activities include:
- refuel after 6 p.m., which limits heating up the fumes
- car pooling
- biking to work or other destinations
- delaying or combining errands
- using water based paint
Active children and adults as well as those with respiratory diseases such as asthma shold limit prolonged outdoor exertion, according to Michigan DEQ guidelines.
