KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Thousands turned out in Kalamazoo, and in communities all over West Michigan for Memorial Day Parades as many thousands more turned out in towns and villages all over the area for their own local events.
Many staked out spots in the shade to avoid what turned out to be a very warm and sunny holiday.
Memorial Day is the day the nation is called on to reflect on the lives of those who died while serving in the armed forces. Originally called Decoration Day, it was started to honor those who fought and died in the Civil War.
It was first officially staged by General John Logan in 1868, three years after the war ended.
In 1882 it was called Memorial Day and the name stuck. .
The holiday is celebrated on the last Monday of May and is more often celebrated these days with family gatherings, three day vacation trips, and barbeques.
That’s why it’s important that we remember the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend it.
