More bad news for your landscape and for agriculture is coming out of southeast Indiana this month with of the discovery of spotted lanternfly.
The insect, native to Asia, was first detected on this continent seven years ago in Pennsylvania and has quickly spread. USDA is tracking its spread and in Michigan MDARD is warning freight carriers and delivery drivers to stay alert. Numerous dead lanternflies were found last winter in a parked truck in the state. Spotted lanternfly is a showy insect throughout its stages of life.
The voracious sap sucking critter poses a threat to nursery and grape production as well as many valued tree species like maples and black walnut. MDARD has a webpage with pictures and information on the spotted lanternfly that’s worth checking out.
