HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Efforts are underway in West Michigan to spread awareness about how to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
Overdose rates in Ottawa County have tripled since 2011. The 28 opoiod-related emergencies represented 90 percent of Ottawa County’s overdose cases, according to county records.
The Red Project serves seven west Michigan counties, including Allegan and Ottawa, and is giving out rescue kits with Naloxone — the drug known as Narcan — for free, with training..
A map of pharmacies making the drug available for free is also available from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
The Red Project offers Naloxone to individuals, family members, and friends who want to be prepared for loved one who may be at risk. The prescription, a brief training, and the medication is provided on site by knowledgeable Red Project staff and volunteers at the following places:
