HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Michigan’s Senate Judiciary Committee has approved House Bill 5783, which mandates that certain medical records be kept for 15 years.
House Republican Mary Whiteford, who represents Michigan District 80 — which runs from South Haven to Plainwell and up to part of Holland — sponsored the bill.
Whiteford, a former nurse, says her bill is one result of the Larry Nassar scandal.
“I hope that it makes a difference,” Whiteford said. “You know, we can’t fix the bad things that happened, but perhaps we can look forward and give our families the tools they need to survive. And this will help protect them. “
The bill now moves to a vote of the full Michigan Senate. If approved, House members must ratify those changes before Gov. Rick Snyder can sign it into law.
The 80th District includes the cities of Allegan, Fennville, part of Holland, Otsego, Plainwell, Saugatuck, and part of South Haven. She also represents the village of Douglas city and the townships of Allegan, Casco, Cheshire, Clyde, Fillmore, Ganges, Gun Plain, Heath, Hopkins, Laketown, Lee, Manlius, Martin, Monterey, Otsego, Overisel, Salem, Saugatuck, Trowbridge, Valley and Watson.
