HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — With temperatures expected to soar this weekend, there can be no better time to hit the beach or the pool. But nothing ruins a hot weekend at the beach or on the water like a mishap.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Eric Westveer says a good swim or a day of boating can be a relief, but suggests keeping safety in mind.
Marine patrol units are dealing with more complaints about speeding boats in no-wake zones.
Water levels are higher this year, Westveer said, and marine patrol deputies are having to remind boaters to slow down and observe the rules of the water.
Big wakes are causing problems along the Kalamazoo River as well as on smaller inland waterways, he said, reminding people to slow down and make sure everyone boating is using personal floatation devices. He said PFDs can save lives if a boater suffers a medical event or is knocked unconscious in a a boating mishap.
