MICHIGAN (WHTC-AM/FM) — With over 500,000 older adults being abused or neglected nationwide each year, the Michigan State Police (MSP) want to raise awareness about the importance of preventing elderly abuse by knowing the indicators of abuse.
Elder and vulnerable adult abuse, neglect and exploitation are behaviors committed against an elder or vulnerable adult who is unable to protect themselves due to a mental or physical impairment or due to advanced age. Offenders are often family members, friends, neighbors or caregivers, and the abuse typically takes place within the home.“Learning how to recognize the signs of abuse and neglect can help victims and their families,” said Community Service Trooper Martin Miller, Rockford Post. “We owe it to our seniors to ensure their safety.”There are six types of abuse that may happen to people over the age of 60: physical, sexual, emotional, neglect, abandonment and financial abuse. Here are some common physical and behavioral indicators of abuse and/or neglect:

- Desertion of the elder at a public place.
