LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Enbridge has offered two alternatives to make its Line 5 pipelines that run under the Straits of Mackinaw safer in a report to the state that was just made.
Spokesman Ryan Duffy says they have looked at a number of alternatives and have two favorites they say are feasible.
Its one of several reports that have been requested by the state in recent years to explore their options, some from Enbridge, some from independent consultants and others from academic experts.
A tunnel 100 feet below the lake bed would cost 350 to 500 million dollars and take 5 to 6 years, and a trench covered with gravel and cobble would cost 250 to 350-million and take 4 to 5 years to build.
Environmentalists still prefer no line under the Straits at all. Governor Snyder says a decision, if one is coming would not be made until this fall.
