LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The numbers are in for the latest seat belt use enforcement effort in Michigan.
During the 14-day period surrounding the Memorial Day Holiday, from May 21st through June 3rd, officers from 143 local police departments, sheriff offices and state police posts across Michigan conducted 14,384 traffic stops, resulting in 4,364 citations for seat belt and child restraint violations, as well as making arrests on 97 drug-related offenses, 64 alcohol-related incidents, and 69 other felony charges.
State police officials say that, according to preliminary reports, 11 crashes resulted in 15 deaths over this two-week period, with no restraints used in one wreck and seat belt use not immediately determined in another four. Among the fatal incident during this time frame was a crash in Barry County that claimed the life of 55-year-old Jeffrey Altena of Hudsonville when a fallen tree limb led to a collision with his motorcycle.
