KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo is one of ten finalists picked by Reader’s Digest for designation as the nicest place in America.
They received 450 nominations from restaurants, cities, schools, companies, and practically any place around the U.S. explaining why they are the nicest.
The panel then narrowed down the submissions to 10 with Kalamazoo still in the running.
So what makes Kalamazoo so nice?
- If you graduate from its public schools, they will pay all your college tuition.
- If you have a problem, the city will send someone around who is not only a police officer, but a firefighter and an EMT with social service skills to help.
- People talk to each other in elevators, say “hi” on the streets and are generous to charity.
Reader’s Digest’s Senior Editor Jeremy Greenfield says they are looking for places that go beyond the usual kindness.
They want to find the places where civility and charity are baked into the fabric of the community, built into the processes and programs in government and part of everyday life.
Very much unlike the uncivil and rude society we seem to be becoming.
Greenfield says the public can vote from now until July 7th and a judge’s panel will also have a say in the winner.
The winner will receive a place on the cover of their magazine this fall and a feature piece on the ABC network.
