ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – President Trump’s choice of Brett Kavanaugh on Monday has given Bill Huizenga more political fuel, not only for his campaign, but also for the efforts of the man he would like to see join him on Capitol Hill.
The four-term Republican US House Representative is on record for endorsing the candidacy of John James for the US Senate. In an email sent to supporters on Tuesday, Huizenga said that, “This is the President’s second nomination to the court, with the first being the very talented and highly qualified Neil Gorsuch. Unfortunately, both of Michigan’s Senators voted against Justice Gorsuch and I expect they will do the same when Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination is voted on as well. This is why Michigan needs a principled conservative like John James fighting for us in the Senate.”
Huizenga had backed Marco Rubio ahead of the 2016 state Presidential Primary, only to see the US Senator from Florida finish fourth, not only in Huizenga’s Congressional district, but statewide. Following that vote, Huizenga supported Donald Trump’s successful Presidential campaign.
James and fellow suburban Detroit businessman Sandy Pensler are vying for the Republican nomination in the August 7th primary to challenge US Senate incumbent Debbie Stabenow in November. The Lansing Democrat has easily won reelection two times since upending Republican incumbent Spencer Abraham in 2000, and the GOP has not had a presence in the US Senate from Michigan since then, with Gary Peters succeeding the retiring Carl Levin two years ago.
