HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Congress is back in session after the Fourth of July break and U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, a Republican based in St. Joseph, says it’s time for lawmakers to get serious about immigration reform.
He called current laws part of a broken system, noting the recent troubles with separated families and the lingering limbo of DACA children.
“I expect the courts to make some rulings in the next couple weeks, whether it be on Dreamers or trying to reunite some of their kids with their parents,” he said.
Upton would also like to see the cap on H2B visas — which allow foreign workers to have seasonal U.S. jobs — needs to be adjusted upwards, or done away with altogether.
He decried the waste when “literally hundreds of thousands of dollars of unpicked crops – whether it be cucumbers or tomatoes or blueberrries now … all of that. They don’t have the workers to pick some of these crops.”
