WASHINGTON (WHTC-AM/FM) – This should come as no surprise.
Within a minute of each other on Friday morning, the offices of Michigan’s two US Senators – Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters – issued statements opposing this week’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to fill an impending vacancy on the US Supreme Court.
Stabenow, a Lansing Democrat, said, “Based on the large number of cases and opinions written throughout Judge Kavanaugh’s career, it is clear that he has chosen to side with the wealthiest special interests over the majority of Americans time after time … he would roll back women’s access to reproductive health care and make it much harder for Michigan families to get affordable insurance coverage … Judge Kavanaugh also has a record of siding with special interests over the rights and freedoms of working people.”
Peters, a suburban Detroit Democrat, echoed similar sentiments of his senior colleague: “Families and businesses in Michigan rely on … hard-won rights and protections. Given Judge Kavanaugh’s clear record of placing corporate interests before the rights of Michiganders, I will oppose his nomination.”
Stabenow and Peters were expected before issuing these statements to follow the lead of Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) in opposing Kavanaugh’s nomination. Currently, there are not enough votes to block his confirmation in the US Senate.
