PORT SHELDON TWP (WHTC-AM/FM) — Ottawa County Sheriff’s marine patrol unit rescued a man from Lake Michigan just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Thurday morning, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Eric Westveer emailed a statement to media announcing that the man, identified as 20 year old Brandon Schmidt, 20 of Allendale. Westveer said it was an accidental drowning.
Rescuers had been called to Windsnest Park in Port Sheldon Township. on the report of a swimmer in Lake Michigan. A 911 caller said a man had been seen going under water about 20 feet from the beach..
Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies along with Port Sheldon Township Fire/Rescue started searching the water, finding an unidentifed man, who was rushed to Holland Hospital in critical condition.
Rescuers includeded Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office road patrol, marine unit, and dive team; Port Sheldon Township Fire Rescue and North Ottawa Communitiy Hospital EMS Ambulance.
