COLDWATER TOWNSHIP (WKZO AM/FM) — Local officials are keeping a close watch, but it appears a failure at the at the Blackhawk Dam has been averted.
Flood warnings were issued through Monday when homeowners who lived near the dam noticed that the dirt at the edges of the concrete dam were eroding at a rapid pace and called 911.
There are about 15-acres of water behind the Blackhawk Dam that could have caused flash flooding if it suddenly rushed downstream.
County staff and the Drain Commissioner responded with heavy equipment and they have shored up the edges of the dam.
They aren’t sure if heavy rains the last few days, animals undermining the soil or some combination of both may have caused the near failure, but they say the situation has stabilized for now.
