LOWELL TOWNSHIP (WKZO AM/FM) — A Schoolcraft grandmother is dead and her husband and two granddaughters are injured after a single car crash in Kent County.
Investigators say 71-year-old Thomas Phelps may have fallen asleep at the wheel when he swerved off the roadway and crashed into a tree around 2:30 p.m. Sunday on Alden Nash Avenue between 36th Street and Emery Drive.
The crash smashed the passenger side of the vehicle, killing his wife, 63-year-old LuAnn Phelps from Schoolcraft.
Their two grandchildren, ages 3 and 6, and their grandfather were all rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash is still under investigation.
