MUSKEGON (WHTC-AM/FM) — A Muskegon Heights superintendent may have broken the law when she spent $25,000 on gift cards for employees, according to an MLive report.
Rane Garcia said she did it to reduce employee turnover, but Michigan Department of Education officials are considering taking some kind of action, according to an MDE spokesman.
The Muskegon Heights Public Schools Academy System superintendent explained her reasoning in a letter, saying she bought the cards for holidays and at the end of the school year to keep staff on. Michigan is experiencing a significant teacher and substitute-teacher shortage.
Garcia told MLive she plans to “make it right.”
