EAST LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan Republican Delegates convened Saturday iat the Lansing Center to confirm the selection of gubernatorial candidate Bill Schuette and Lisa Lyons as their candidate for Lt. Governor and to settle some high profile competitive races.
House Speaker Tom Leonard beat Lawton Senator Tonya Schuitmaker and will run as Attorney General, despite arguments that she will be a stronger candidate against Democrat Dana Nessel..
Republicans picked Eastern Michigan University Trustee Mary Treder Lang to run for Secretary of State after the favorite, Stan Grot, dropped out of the race last week, citing family obligations and the general political atmosphere.
Governor Rick Snyder sent a tape, still refusing to endorse Schuette, even after the selection of the daughter of his Chief of Staff to be Lt. Governor.
The Conventioneers actually booed when Republican Supreme Court Justice Beth Clement was nominated for reelection, because of some of her votes from the bench that the GOP faithful did not think were in the interest of the party.
The Democrats also convened on Saturday, focused mostly on a heavily contested race for the MSU Board nominations.
There were nine candidates and the delegates whittled that down to Muskegon lawyer Brianna Scott and Kelly Tebay, a fundraiser for United Way and a sexual assault survivor. Both promised to shake up the MSU Board and get rid of John Engler.
The Democrats spent Sunday formally nominating the top of their ticket, Gretchen Whitmer and her choice for Lt. Govenor, Garlin Gilchrist II.
The delegates also officially voted for Dana Nessel to be their candidate for Attorney General and Jocelyn Benson as their nominee for Secretary of State.
