KENT COUNTY (WKZO AM/FM) — The West Nile Virus has claimed the life of an elderly man in West Michigan.
The Kent County Health Department says a man in his 80’s was hospitalized with the virus and was pronounced dead over the weekend.
This is now the second death with the first one occurring in Wayne County.
Statewide at least 8 people were found sick with West Nile in over 4 counties including Berrien, Kent, Oakland and Wayne.
No human cases were reported in Kalamazoo, but officials did find several dead birds in the area with the virus.
Health officials are warning Michiganders to avoid mosquito bites as much as possible by putting on bug spray that contains DEET, wearing light colors and long clothing, or just avoiding going outside during dusk when the bugs are most active.
