STURGIS, MI (WTVB) – An AMBER Alert that was issued overnight for three Sturgis children was cancelled Thursday morning after they were found safe and unharmed while their father was taken into custody.
Police say 37-year-old Fernando Cruz turned himself in to authorities at around 9:00 a.m. Thursday at his home in Sturgis without resistance, almost 11 hours after the whole episode began. Sturgis Police also said no weapons were found when Cruz surrendered. The AMBER Alert issued by the Michigan State Police said he was considered to be armed and dangerous. Cruz was taken to the Saint Joseph County Jail and was expected to face a number of charges.
Police said Cruz allegedly assaulted his girl friend and removed his three children from their residence in Sturgis at around 10 p.m. Wednesday night. The children were between two and five years old. Cruz also allegedly made comments that he was going to harm them and himself.
At one point, investigators believed Cruz has gone into Indiana and was near Fremont.
