MACKINAC CITY (WKZO AM/FM) — In spite of more challenging rules, threatening weather and less help with transportation, 25,000 people turned out for this year’s Mackinac Bridge Walk on Labor Day.
Bridge Authority Spokesman Bob Sweeney says they had no major issues and no traffic backups during the event and they are very pleased with the way it went.
The rule changes were instituted to improve security during the event, which used to allow traffic and the walk to take place at the same time.
Beginning last year, they banned traffic during the walk, had people start from both sides of the bridge, and then either walk back to where they began from the halfway point, or do what is now called the Double-cross, and that’s to walk all the way across and back…if you were fast enough.
Only emergency vehicles were allowed on the bridge during the walk.
