HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Challenge Manufacturing has managed to reduce at $7,000 OSHA fine by 40 percent after the workplace death of 56-year-old Scott Teusink.
A 5,000-pound steel coil fell on him on Dec. 22, 2017.
Hospitalized with multiple bone fractured, Teusink died on December 30, 2017, of complications from his injuries. He’d worked as a podiatrist in New York City for 25 years before moving back to Holland to be near family, according to his obituary.
The son of area tennis coach Tiger and Shriley Teusink, Mr. Teusink had been a standout basketball player in high school and college.
Of the 39 people who died in 2017, nearly half (15) of the deaths were caused by falls, while nine, including Mr. Teusink, died after being struck. In 2016, state officials documented 43 on-the-job deaths.
So far this year, 20 people have died while working.
Federal OSHA figures show 5,190 workplace fatalities nationally in 2016, a 7-percent increase from 2015.
