HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Backyard beehives, chickens, ducks and now … mini pigs?
City of Holland officials are set to consider a resident’s request to keep a pet mini pig. City code currently only allows residents to keep domestic, household pets such as dogs, cats, canaries or other animals or birds which are “commonly kept and housed” inside dwellings.
Mark Vanderploeg, Holland’s community and neighborhood services director sent a memo to city council members ahead of wednesday’s work-study session recommending a public hearing on whether or not to add mini pigs to current ordinance.
According to the American Mini Pig Association, most healthy mini pigs’ adult weight ranges from 50 to 150 pounds.
A recent case in Georgetown Township, found the zoning commission choosing between enforcing an ordinance to remove two pet ducks from a family with an autistic child. Commissioners told the family the child would be able to keep those ducks.
