UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM) — The Michigan State Police Sex Offender Registry Enforcement Unit finished a compliance sweep in the cities of Muskegon and Muskegon Heights checking up on registered sex offenders, according to a statement emailed to media.
During contacts at 140 residences during the one-day effort, police discovered 14 new violations of the Michigan Sex Offender Registry Act. Warrants will be sought by state police through the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office. State police investigators indicated they plan to revisit 36 residences where they found no one home during the sweep.
The Sex Offender Registry Enforcement Unit worked with the Muskegon Police Department, the state police Rockford Post, and the state police Emergency Support Team.
The Michigan Sex Offenders Registration Act requires registered sex offenders to regularly report to their area law enforcement agency, sheriff’s office or nearest state police post, to verify their address and other required information.
Reporting must be made in person at a registering authority. The type of sex crime conviction determines how often the person must report.
Failure to report changes of any required information is a four-year felony.
