GOGEBIC COUNTY (WKZO AM/FM) — Cougar sightings are a sensitive subject with the DNR.
They say there may be a few in the state but there is no conclusive evidence of a breeding population.
The DNR’s Kevin Swanson says they were once a native species but the ones they see now have traveled here alone from the Great Plains looking for mates and their own territories.
The DNR has had 38 sightings, but many of them of the same cougar. Swanson says they are exceedingly rare.
After 9-years and millions of images a remote deer cam in Gogebic County in the Western U.P. has finally captured its first photos of a cougar.
