HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The call to strip citizenship for those born in the US to undocumented parents has raised the hue and cry of those on both sides of the political aisle.
During the recording of an appearance on the “Axios on HBO” program, President Trump said that he believes he has the legal footing to issue such an executive order that apparently runs contrary to the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution. While reaction to those remarks has been, for the most part, in opposition to Mr. Trump, Congressman Fred Upton believes that this debate overshadows the bigger problem of immigration reform.
“The current immigration system is broken,” the St. Joseph Republican said during his weekly appearance on “WHTC Morning News” today. “It’s broken for everybody, and the longer we don’t fix the problem, it only perpetuates itself.”
Mr. Trump’s remarks, which will air this coming weekend, comes on the heels of the announcement that roughly 5,000 active duty troops will be deployed along the border by week’s end to augment the 2,000 National Guard troops already stations there as a slow-moving caravan of thousands of refugees from Central America make their way through Mexico towards the US. “Yes, we need border security,” Upton added, “but at the same time we need a system that establishes legal status for those who are here without a criminal record so we can move forward. I’m convinced that there is a bipartisan solution to this.”
The slow-moving caravan may not reach the U.S. border for weeks.
