Two teen Spring Lake boys suffered burns after their tree fort caught on fire early Saturday morning, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Matt Wildfong.
The teens later told police they’d been drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana with three other boys and they decided to build a fire inside some cinderblocks in the tree house.
The tree house was fairly close to the ground, according to authorities.. After three boys left, the remaining two agreed one would stay awake and watch the fire, while the other slept.
But they both fell asleep on a mattress in the tree fort, Wildfong said, and the fire spread to the mattress.
Wildfong said the boys’ injuries are non-life-threatening and the incident remains under investigation.
