Despite only marginal soil moisture in parts of Iowa and Nebraska, for the most part soil moisture in the Midwest’s prime crop growing areas looks pretty good.
USDA Meteorologist Brad Rippey says even though there have been dry pockets east and south of the bone dry Upper Midwest and Northwest, places like Michigan have built up a moisture surplus in recent weeks. The outlook for the Great Lakes shows a good chance for replenishment of subsoil moisture in the near term. At the same time, he says there’s little chance for a drought-ending weather change in the Northern Great Plains or Northwest.
For these places, it’s likely to be more triple digits and smoky skies.
