HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Holland residents Barbara and James Chance were arraignmed Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2018, in Grand Rapids District Court on the charges of perjury in an investigative subpoena, and being an accessory after the fact, according to a Grand Rapids Press/MLive report.
Their son, Jared Chance, 29, stands charged with mutilation of a dead body and concealing a death, after the partial remains of an Oshtemo Township woman were found in the basement of his Grand Rapids duplex earlier this month. Michigan State Police crime lab DNA tests identified the body as that of Ashley Young, 31, who had gone missing the week before.
The parents allegedly lied to police about their last communications with their son prior to his arrest. Prosecutors allegeJames Chance, a retired police officer, was aware that his son had dismembered Young’s body, but did not tell police.
According to a WOOD TV report, Rock Island, IL, police confirmed that James Howard Chance worked for that department for James Chance retired after more than 20 years of service, as s sergeant, on June 15, 1989.
Murder charges are expected to be filed against Jared Chance.
Young had missing for about a week before the DNA testing identified her remains last week.
Should either Barbara or James Chance be convicted of perjury, they could face a lifetime prison sentence.
