DETROIT, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A new policy from the Michigan Department of Corrections will allow inmates to receive transition therapy while incarcerated.
Under the old policy inmates were only allowed to receive such treatment if they had it scheduled prior to be sentenced. Inmates will have to undergo a psychological evaluation before receiving any treatment.
Metro Detroit transgender advocate Julisa Abad says transgender Michigan residents should not commit crimes just to go to prison and receive the treatment at taxpayer expense, but for many people the new rules will be beneficial.
“It’s more than just hormones. It also says that depending on the circumstance or the individual, it’s gender affirming clothing, so they can wear the clothing of the gender that they pick.
