KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — Thousands of NASCAR fans are expected to make their way to Michigan International Speedway in Lenawee County this weekend for the Pure Michigan 400.
Michelle Grinnell with Travel Michigan said it’s a significant annual tourist event.
“Sixty percent of the guests that come in for race weekend at Michigan International Speedway are from outside Michigan, and about 20 percent of those are from Canada,” Grinnell said.
She said it’s a prime opportunity to market the state.
“The campgrounds at MIS are the largest in the state,” Grinnell said. “We’re going to make sure to get our Pure Michigan travel guide into their hands.”
And she also said the race is somewhat of a celebration of Michigan.
“It’s just a great way to celebrate the car cuture in the state,” Grinnell said.
Events are scheduled for the entire weekend. The Pure Michigan 400 green flag drops Sunday at 3 p.m.
