JACKSON, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Today is National Safe Digging 8-1-1 Day.
Consumers Energy is encouraging Michigan homeowners and business owners to call MISS- DIG 811 before starting digging projects.
Lisa Douglas is Public Safety Outreach Coordinator for Consumers Energy and says there are a lot of buried infrastructure facilities in the ground that people may not be aware of.
“Things like underground natural gas lines, electric lines, or even other facilities. When people are planning projects like installing a new deck or something simple like replacing a mailbox ppst, people don’t realize their in danger under the ground and that they need to be aware where those facilities are so that they don’t hit them.”
Damages to Consumers Energy natural gas system because homeowners did not call MISS DIG- 811 are down 21 percent in the first half of 2017 compared to same period in 2016. There were 104 reports of these damages in the six months of 2016, and 82 in 2017.
