GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A team of seven Red Cross volunteers from Grand Rapids are being delayed as they make their way to Houston.
American Red Cross of West Michigan executive director Mike Mitchell says some will be delayed because the airport has been shut down in Houston. Mitchell says they always need volunteers.
“If a person were to volunteer with us now, they would be able to get the training necessary to possibly go in the second or third wave of deployment because were gonna be senidng people down here for probably months to come.”
The team left Sunday evening and will assist with the recovery from Hurricane Harvey. This week food and supplies were sent out of Grand Rapids.
Twenty volunteers have been dispatched to the storm area already and the Red Cross in west Michigan has more than 40 emergency vehicles ready to go when needed.
