NASHVILLE, TN (WHTC-AM/FM) – Restrictions have been lifted by the fdereal government on the transfer of surplus military equipment to local and state police agencies.
The transfer will also include military vehicles and high-powered weapons says Attorney General Jeff Sessions. speaking at a police conference in Nashville yesterday said military surplus equipment helps reduce violent crime and assaults on police.
Sessions added that , “Good equipment saves lives.” President Obama curtailed the practice a couple of years ago. Obama’s action was a response to concerns about the militarization of local and state police.
In West Michigan, Wyoming Police Chief James Carmody says he is pleased saying the use of a military vehicle in a situation in 2015 saved lives.
“It just gives us that much more protection and it doesn’t expose that citizen to any undo harm or risk. I understand to some extent what people’s concern’s are, but again it comes down to protection. When you’re standing in a line of officers in a public protest, you don’t know what ‘s gonna happen in that situation.”
