LANSING, MI (WKZO-AM/FM) — M-STEP results from this spring reveal Michigan grade-schoolers are generally makings strides in math and social studies, but have taken a step back in language arts.
The 2017 results were released by the state’s department of education Tuesday.
Math scores were up in every grade but the fourth. Social studies scores were higher in grades 5, 8 and 11.
However, English language proficiency was down nearly across the board. Scores lower in every grade except the fifth.
The decline in the language arts category comes after improvement was seen in half the grades tested last year.
“The Spring 2017 results show math and social studies scores are continuing to improve, and that is exciting news,” State Superintendent Brian Whiston said in a press release. “The English language arts scores are disappointing, however.”
In a press release, State Superintendent Brian Whiston said he was excited by the math and social studies numbers and disappointed by the language arts results.
