LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A new study from the Coalition Protecting Auto No-Fault (CPAN) finds women in Michigan are being charged more than men for auto insurance by some companies.
The Insurance Alliance of Michigan’s Lori Conarton says the study missed things, like fraud, and fees. Conarton says Michigan’s unique no-fault system allows for unlimited lifetime medical benefits that no other state in the country has.
Conarton says while they haven’t seen the methodology behind the CPAN study into auto insurance rates.
“It is illegal in Michigan to use gender and maritial status as a rating factor.”
Insurance expert Doug Heller compared nearly 100 online premium quotes in Detroit and Brighton. The srudy showed that Esurance, Liberty Mutual, and Progressive charged widows and single women five-to-ten-percent more than married women, while Progressive charged women 38-percent more than men, and Esurance was 33-percent higher for women than men.
