DEARBORN (WKZO-AM/FM) — AAA says Michiganders are noticing the after effects of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma at gas pumps throughout the state.
The statewide average for regular is $2.69. Susan Hiltz, a spokesperson with the auto club, said that’s up seven cents from last week and 48 cents from the same time last year.
“We saw such a large surge because people were gassing up before the Hurricane hit in Florida,” Hiltz said. “That had a big impact.”
Prices should trend lower. The wholesale price of gas is falling, the supply of gas remains high and Gulf Coast refineries shut down prior to Harvey are coming back on line.
Hiltz also said, traditionally, gas prices decline after Labor Day.
“It’s not a lack of gasoline, it’s just a distribution issue because of the weather situations,” Hiltz said.
GasBuddy.com says the Monday average was $2.69 in Kalamazoo, $2.72 in Grand Rapids and $2.71 in Lansing.
