KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM)– The Senate Judiciary Committee voted unanimously to pass a package of bills calling for more driver education on the rights of bikers and pedestrians and the statewide deployment of Kalamazoo’s 5-foot safety zone between cars and bikes.
It came after after hearing from the survivors of last year’s biking tragedy in Cooper Township.’
Survivor Paul Gobble testified that the 5-foot rule has to be uniform statewide, so that every driver knows that is the standard for safety.
Sponsor Margaret O’Brien says another bill would require an hour in driver ‘s training courses for teens that would focus on the rights of others on the road.
These bills fell short last session and still must make it through the full Senate and the full House before hitting the Governor’s desk this session.
