LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Snyder has signed legislation that will keep out-of-State residents who own second homes in Michigan from declaring them as their primary homestead to avoid Michigan taxes.
In Lakeshore towns in Berrien County, where there are a lot of summer homes and condominiums, sponsor Kim LaSata of Bainbridge Township estimates that it costs local school districts millions of dollars in tax revenue.
Co-sponsor Dave Pagel of Berrien Springs says “We are fixing a problem that existed for far too long in Michigan. This new law prevents an improper practice that was taking money away from our schools for years.”
The bill not only permits local taxing units to increase future revenue, but to go back three years and assess past taxes that have been avoided.
