KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — A high speed police pursuit that ended with a motorcycle crash and a swim in the Kalamazoo River right near the city sewage plant, has resulted in new charges against a couple that was already wanted by the law.
The 43-year-old Cooper Township man and a 42-year-old woman were first spotted heading north on Riverview at a high rate of speed on a motorcycle.
A Kalamazoo Township officer gave chase but broke off the pursuit for safety sake. A second police cruiser picked up the chase and the couple crashed the bike in a parking lot at Mt. Olivet and Riverview and despite injuries, fled on foot to the river, jumping into the water.
A handgun was recovered near the crash scene.
They were both talked into surrendering after a good soaking, and came back out of the water.
Both were wanted on bench warrants, and the motorcycle they were riding had been stolen.
The pair were treated for minor injuries and jailed.
They are being held for fleeing and eluding and resisting, but may face additional charges.
