KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Weekend flooding in Kalamazoo has caused some closures today and some businesses will be waiting for water levels to fall before they begin their recovery.
At Crosstown and Vine six vehicles stalled in the water Saturday and people had to be rescued, including a couple that were headed to Bronson Hospital. A number of streets on the south side of downtown Kalamazoo remain barricaded until water levels go down.
Community Mental Health and Substance Abuse on Crosstown Parkway, and KVCC’s new Culinary Trades campus on Walnut will be closed today, and J & J Paint has water in their showroom and no doubt other businesses in the area will also suffered flooding or will be inaccessible due to the high water.
Bronson Hospital says anyone headed to an appointment should leave early because some of the entrances to their parking ramps are flooded.
Kalamazoo Public Safety Chief Jeff Hadley says they were also victims of this weekend’s flooding, resorting to sandbags at their back door to keep waves from lapping into Public Safety Headquarters on Crosstown Parkway. He says they have had about a dozen cars towed off flooded roadways that were stranded and may have real damage after they wandered into pools and sucked water into the intake vents.
