LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – This week is “Operation Safe Driver Week.” and Michigan State Police will be enforcing traffic safety.
Operation Safe Driver Week is sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), in partnership nationally with government, industry and safety organizations. CVSA’s “Operation Safe Driver Week” was created to help decrease the number of deaths and injuries resulting from crashes involving large trucks, buses and passenger vehicles due to unsafe driving behaviors like speeding and distracted and aggressive driving.
Trooper Martin Miller of the Rockford post says distracted driving takes many forms.
“You could be talking about somebody who wants to change the radio station, they are fooling with their GPS, answering the phone and making phone calls. The big issue we are dealing with right now is texting. It’s a big distraction. Texting takes a lot of concentration believe it or not. You know you could travel over two football fields in just a few seconds and when you’re looking at a text, it’s like driving that distance with your eyes closed.”
The effort is part of the department’s participation in Towards Zero Deaths (TZD), which is the United States highway safety vision. It unites stakeholders from engineering, enforcement, education and emergency medical services with the common goal of reducing traffic fatalities to zero.
Operation Safe Driver Week is October 15-21, 2017.
