SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The debate continues on whether to build on the Saugatuck dunes.
A public meeting was held Wednesday evening with the The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and most who spoke at the meeting are against it. A proposal from Cottage Home’s would have 23 homes and a marina built on the dunes. The project is being called the North Shores of Saugatuck project and would be located on the dunes on the edge of the Kalamazoo River near Lake Michigan.
Many concerns were brought up including the environment. A lumber town town in Singapore was used as an example because it was buried by dunes in the late 19th century.
The Army Corps of Engineers has asked the developer to perform a full archaeological survey before a decision is made on a permit. The public will still be allowed to comment through October 27th.
